Willow Basket Weaving

Willow Basket Weaving

Saturday, December 14, 2024
9am-5pm

Only 10 spaces available. We anticipate this class will fill fast.

Learn the way of willow! Using a combination of wild and cultivated basketry willow, we will weave a small basket, learning various weaves and techniques along the way.  Specific techniques covered are weaving a round base using pairing, a 3-rod wale, french randing, and creating a decorative rod border.  This is meant to be an intro to willow basketry, focusing on getting to know the material and the process of weaving with willow.  While weaving, we will discuss harvesting and cultivation methods, materials preparation, and ongoing care for your basket.

Please bring:

  • Pruning shears if you have them (think garden clippers, like Felcos)
  • A small craft knife

The Willow Project at Santa Cruz Permaculture Farm

The Santa Cruz Permaculture Farm is growing more and more willow every year to support the cultural renaissance of regional and national growers and weavers. Currently we have 1 acre planted with 18 different varieties of basketry and architectural willows. Presently we are offering courses to educate ourselves and others and continuing to expand our patch, and in the coming years we will begin selling rods for weavers and cuttings for growers.
