Do you have fruit trees in need of some love? Have you tried to learn pruning but find the topic confusing? Want to develop professional skills and be an ‘orchard keeper’?

This daylong workshop covers the basic goals and techniques of winter pruning deciduous fruit trees, including apples, pears, peaches, nectarines, plums and more. The workshop includes lecture, demonstrations, and an opportunity for you to gain hands-on practice pruning. We will cover:

  • Fruit tree anatomy and physiology – What are fruit buds and vegetative buds? What are the rootstock and scion? How do I know how old a tree is by looking at it?

  • Annual cycle of growth and careWhat is happening when? What should I be doing when?

  • Pruning and training the ‘open center’ and ‘central leader’ tree forms – How do I manage the tree for high yields, ease of maintenance. and good health?

  • Tools of the trade – What are the best tools to have on hand? 

This workshop is appropriate for the beginner, home orchardist, or small-scale farmer. Whether you have one tree or one hundred this day-long workshop introduces the principles and practices to effectively take care of your trees this winter.



This workshop is offered on a sliding scale as follows:

  • $120 – Regular Tuition

  • $100, $80, or $60 – Reduced Rate

Payment Options

A welcome email with the location and what to bring will be sent upon registration (such as your lunch, thermos, warm clothes, and pruning supplies).

Cancellations up to January 27th will be given a full refund. No refunds given after that date. However, if we see that it will rain on February 3rd we will postpone this workshop to Sunday February 4th, or another date TBD. At that point participants unable to make it to the new date will have the option for a refund.
